We got our first egg yesterday - whoopee!
And we got another today! Here is a picture of our first egg layer, Betty (in front) with her boyfriend Clyde and sister Veronica. It's not a very good picture of her, she has beautiful black feathers that seem to be misted with an iridescent teal.
Right now the eggs are smaller than the standard large size, but from what I've read, the first ones are usually smaller than those that follow. Soon her sister should be laying and then everyone else. Well, except for Clyde, Buzzard, Andy and Stanley of course - our guys. These girls are the oldest at 26 weeks - which seems a little late to start for her breed, but the hot summer weather could have slowed 'em down. Yesterday and today are cool autumn-like days; it was in the 50's last night. Maybe that helped jump-start the process.
Whatever, it sure was exciting seeing that first egg!
