Day before yesterday I walked down to get some scuppernongs in one of the front pastures. Here are some pictures of my little walk...
In this shot, I was leaving the cabin. This is the view from the deck... it was a beautiful day.. You can see the woodshed, old chicken house and funky storage building on the right. Someday they will be gone!
As I walked, you can get a better look at the ugly storage building, and see the direction of the garden; it's down the hill below the bench to the right...
A quick detour takes me to the autumn garden that's just getting going - and Sophie keeping watch...
In this picture, there is a a fork in the driveway. Going to the right is the old driveway we no longer use and to the left is the current driveway that goes towards the mailbox and scuppernong vines... so that's the direction I went...
I turned the corner and headed on down the driveway through the woods...
And almost got bonked on the head with one of these; I'm not sure what it is and need to find out. It's quite a bit bigger than a walnut and there were lots of them scattered about. Just a tree seed? I've got some investigatin' to do.
Here you see the pond in-between the trees in the middle of the picture, as I approached it and the open pastures.
Here is part of the pond; it's a little low...
A little right turn and I saw Mike out in the distance hand-mowing some of the tall grass. Normally he would be on his new "cadillac" mower, but it caught fire about a month ago. He came running up the driveway calling for me in a crazed panic! He was so lucky he didn't get hurt; he was sitting on it when it just ignited! It's in the process of being repaired and fortunately we got the fire extinguisher to it before it was totally destroyed.
I turned left to head towards the scuppernongs after waving to Mike...
Turned around when I got there and took a picture of the vines...
Here is a shot while underneath the vines - looking up - the best way to pick them. They are loaded with grapes! I picked some, but there are so many there. I wonder if the deer like them?
Behind the scuppernongs is the little birch forest near the creek and a little pond where a natural spring is always pumping up water...
And some tiny, little flowers I've never seen before...
After walking around a bit there, I headed back towards Mike, going past my old truck...
And see him and one of the neighbor's horses. I stopped and chatted with Mike for awhile before heading for the mailbox...
This shot shows some of the trees we had to cut down in order to level out our pastures... which is still in the process of getting done...
Amid the dead trees were flowers popping up...
I picked up the mail and turned around to go back up to the cabin...
Back up the driveway...
Can you see the cabin in the middle of this picture? It's pretty well-hidden by the trees and foliage...
There it is... up the hill...
And here are the scuppernongs I picked...
